Pretending to know Kamini's secret, Kabira blackmailed her to raise Tina with a proper education. In retaliation, Kabira killed Kamini's brother which is why he went to jail. Kabira then reveals to Monty that Tina's father was murdered by Kamini's brother after overhearing a secret involving Ravi and the temple of Kali.
He is later shocked to find that Tina's Rani Sahiba and Kamini are one and the same. As Monty explores the area and learns the Verma Family story from the locals, including that Ravi's mother and his sister were ousted from their house by Kamini, he starts to experience more of Ravi's memories which become more intense. Tina tells him that she was brought up by a woman she calls Rani Sahiba and her uncle Kabira who, having served 10 years for murder, is released from jail. Monty travels to Ooty (coincidentally near Coonoor) where Tina lives and they fall in love. Monty's doctors joke that maybe he is Ravi's reincarnation, but in all seriousness should just take a vacation and rest. Oberoi, is a twenty-one-year-old singer who starts to have visions of Ravi's memories triggered by a tune that Ravi used to like. Two decades later, Monty, an orphan raised by G.G. Distraught at the sudden death of her son, Ravi's mother demands the Goddess allow her son to pay his mother's debt for dying prematurely, while Kamini inherits everything. On their way home to Coonoor, Kamini rams Ravi over a cliff near a small temple of the Goddess Kali. Ravi calls his mother to tell her the good news and that he is marrying his girlfriend Kamini, who unbeknownst to him is a gold-digger working for Judah. An underperformer when released, Karz will always be a blockbuster material for me!! A must see for those of you who havent, if at all there are any.The movie begins with Ravi Verma winning a legal battle against Sir Judah who had unjustly usurped Ravi's father's wealth and property after his death. Subhash Ghai had penchant for giving unique English name to his villains - Sir Judah, Sir John (Ram Lakhan) etc. The mute Prem Nath as Sir Judah spoke volumes through his silence. It is her career best performance and seems Ghai had a tough time convincing her to sign on the villainous role. Rishi Kapoor was brilliant as pop star Monty while the ever gorgeous Simi Garewal was a class apart in the negative role of Kamini.
The song itself has a Farah Khan film as well as countless remixes as reference. Moreover, Laxmikant Pyarelal's music with the iconic song 'Om Shanti Om' and the mesmerizing signature tune elevates the film to an altogether different level. The film has a solid script (albeit plagarised from Hollywood's 'The Reincarnation of Peter Proud (1975)) with a taut narrative, breathtaking Ooty locales, excellent cinematography and super competent direction by Ghai. It is only in the '90s decade that Karz got its due recognition as the finest effort of showman Subhash Ghai. Karz was not only panned but also unfairly compared to Mehbooba (1976) and Kudrat (1981) - two box office duds dealing with the same reincarnation theme. The audience of that time, fed generously with escapist actioners of Amitabh Bachchan, found this reincarnation drama a bit too elite for their taste. But do you know Karz bombed at the box office when released in June 1980 which greatly disappointed Rishi Kapoor who had pined a lot of hope on it.
